I love dogs!
If you haven’t picked up on my love for dogs yet, then you’ve probably been under a rock (or hiding from COVID 19).
We have a total of 7 German Shepherds on the farm. They are all loved and treated like our human children (of which we have two).
I guess you picked up which type of babies I liked more….
So as you can imagine bath time isn’t just a quick hop in the bath and then it’s done. It’s a process…
To bathe seven large dogs takes planning, commitment, and a whole lot of shampoo! As with every other dog breed, certain breeds have their own needs when it comes to a shampoo. Some breeds needs a lot of moisture for the skin (like border collies – I have one of those too), and other breeds need a little more in depth cleaning action.
When it comes to our German Shepherds we’ve tried almost every product available and every single time it comes short.
What do you do when you know but you need but you can’t find it – you turn to the internet. After testing and experimenting with numerous homemade shampoos, that weren’t only cheaper to make at home but lot more convenient to have on hand if you live out of town, I developed this one.
It has enough cleaning action to get rid of the dirt, grime and mud (which they love to play in), whilst giving their coats all the nutrition needed to shine as if they’ve just qualified for shampoo commercial.
The ingredients are things you probably have on hand, so need to run to the shop.

This recipe makes 1L of dog shampooÂ
500 ml Sunlight Liquid / Dawn Dishwashing Liquid
2 tbps Coconut Oil
4 tbps Glycerin
10 drops Tea Tree Oil
5 drops Lavender Oil
250ml warm water
250ml white vinegar
Directions for use:
- Give your dog a treat
- Run a luke warm bath
- Give your dog a treat
- Wet his fur thoroughly while praising himÂ
- Give your dog a treat
- Use a generous amount of shampoo and lather into his coat
- Give him another treat
- Massage the shampoo into his coat until he’s sighing with joy
- Give him a hug (yes a wet hug) and a treat
- Rinse thoroughly until you’ve removed all soap suds
- Give him another treat
- Step back and let him jump out
- Watchout! He’s going to shake-rattle-and-roll
- Give him another treat

I also have a BC, who hates a bath! Every couple of years we go thru dry skin issues! What is your formula for your BC? Not sure that hugs will work🤣🤩🥰

With my Border Collies, I’ve learned through the years that they need a diet high in Omega fats. What I do to substitute Bailey’s diet is I make sure to give her lard cooked with rice once a week (I use sheep or pork lard). If I can’t find lard, I usually compensate with a tin of tuna added to her kibble. In my experience dry skin with Border Collies needs to be treated from the inside out. I’ve also heard of owners adding a melted tablespoon of coconut to their Border Collie’s kibble. Of course flea and tick control are also at the top of the list when it comes to skin problems in pets. It might be a good idea to visit the vet next time it happens, but I find this method worked for me. Give your BC a hug from me. Love, Milan.
